Clinical Rotations

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at The Ohio State University offers a large and varied caseload. The radiology section has 4 full-time radiology faculty and six radiology residents. The section is supported by 5 full-time technologists, a registered diagnostic sonographer and an administrative assistant. The section is currently equipped with three small animal diagnostic radiology suites (4 x-ray machines, including 2 fluoroscopy units), an ultrasound suite, helical computed tomography (including large animals), and nuclear medicine facilities. Magnetic resonance imaging is currently available at a shared on-campus imaging center. Diagnostic imaging studies are performed with the guidance and collaboration of experienced radiology faculty. Emphasis during the first year is on diagnostic radiology and special radiographic procedures. During the second and third years, the resident rotates through all of the diagnostic imaging services.

Educational Opportunities

Didactic seminars, radiographic interpretation conferences and journal clubs for residents are offered weekly. A comprehensive collection of graduate level courses provides residents with relevant course material for partial fulfillment of the MS degree requirements.

Master of Science Program

Original research or clinical investigation leading to scholarly publication is encouraged. Significant research and a thesis are required of residents in the 3-year combined program leading to the MS degree. The college’s Council on Research reviews proposals and administers funds for research projects. Opportunities also are available to collaborate on extramurally-funded research projects with faculty in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Department of Veterinary Biosciences, or in other departments on campus including the College of Medicine. To facilitate research opportunities, residents are given personal enrichment quarters during which they are free from scheduled ward duties and clinical case responsibilities. Enrichment time is provided to allow pursuit of course work, independent study, research, thesis writing, publication, or other elective endeavors. The maximum time available for these enrichment activities is 6-months for residents in the 3-year combined residency and graduate studies program.

Publication Requirements

Residents will demonstrate an understanding of research design by successfully completing a research project as part of their MS requirements. Residents are expected to prepare and submit their MS thesis research for publication and present this work at a state or national veterinary meeting.
