Pet Crossing Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic

Description

Pet Crossing Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic is an American Animal Hospital Association accredited, full service facility. We employ 4 veterinarians, 6 certified veterinary technicians and approximately 15 other support staff. Our doctors include a nationally known authority on dental care and a board certified surgeon who makes frequent visits to our facility.

Our General Practice Externship can be either a 2 or 4 week externship.  During this time, students will see a variety of cases ranging from puppy wellness visits to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care. This externship will include some exposure to dentistry and laser surgery, but will involved mostly outpatient care and inpatient internal medicine. We have a Board Certified Radiologist who travels to our clinic to read radiographs and perform ultrasound and echocardiography. We also have a Board Certified Surgeon who travels to our clinic to read radiographs and perform ultrasound and echocardiography. We also have a Board Certified Surgeon who travels to our clinic we request advanced surgical expertise. All of our doctors will be involved in directing this externship.

Our Dentistry Externship is typically a 4 week externship. During this time, students are involved in all aspects of advanced dentistry. Topics covered include how to take and interpret intraoral radiographs, indications for various dental procedures, and how to perform routine dental cleaning as well as more advanced procedures such as surgical extraction. Other procedures such as endodontics and jaw surgery will be demonstrated if case load allows.

  • Kate Knutson; DVM, professional interests include dentistry and oncology, advanced training in dentistry through the Animal Dental Training Center in Baltimore, MD as well as other training courses, member of the American Veterinary Dental Society, co-authored AAHA Dental Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats
  • Steve Barghusen; DVM, Diplomat ABVP, professional interests include ophthalmology, internal medicine and laser surgery, advanced training in companion animal medicine and surgery at the Cornell University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Ithaca, NY, specializing in canine and feline practice
  • Valerie Aliano; DVM, professional interests include reproduction, senior care, endoscopy, hip evaluation and laser surgery, advanced training in endoscopy and laser surgery and is certified to use the PennHip System, member of the Veterinary Laser Society, AVMA and AAHA
  • Mary Matzek; DVM, professional interests include medicine, surgery and dentistry

Responsibilities

General Practice – students should bring a list of areas that they would like to improve in so that we can create a learning experience that best suits them.

Dental – students will be in charge of one dental surgery case during their externship. Finally, students will present an interesting case they were involved with at the end of their externship.
