
Veterinary Specialists of South Florida is located approximately 15 minutes southwest of
Fort Lauderdale
, Fl, VSSF is a busy referral practice offering state of the art veterinary care to the
South Florida
community. The hospital is 13,500 sq ft facility housing a complete radiological facility (including a complete x-ray unit, computed tomography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine including radioiodine treatment of hyperthyroidism, fluoroscopy, ultrasonography and a full range of special radiographic procedures), a complete endoscopy function and a full complement of surgical equipment (including total hip replacement, neurosurgical procedures, etc.). On premises are CT (4th generation Technicare), ortho-voltage radiation therapy, I-131, fluoroscopy, ultrasound with spectral Doppler, endoscopes, full electrodiagnostic capabilities including evoked potentials, and emergency/critical care equipment (o2 cage, respirator, respiratory monitors, etc). The veterinary staff includes four board-certified specialists, two general practitioners, one emergency clinician (interned at AMC – NY) and an exotic animal medicine practitioner. Interns will do one week on, 3 weeks off night duty in the emergency clinic; during the three weeks off they will rotate through daytime specialty clinics (they will not be scheduled for general practice duties). The internship will be formally structured with project/publication/presentation requirements. Faculty in support of the program include myself for internal medicine, neurology, and neurosurgery; Ron Burk, formerly of the
Animal
Medical
Center
(boarded in Radiology and Radiation Oncology); Rob Weeren (boarded in Surgery) and Mike Aronsohn (boarded in Surgery). The emergency clinic will be anchored by Brian Roberts, who is coming form the
Animal
Medical
Center
and who will be working towards CVECC certification. We are currently looking for another internist, and an exotics veterinarian will be joining us later in the year.
Interns will do one week on, 3 weeks off night duty in the emergency clinic; during the three weeks off they will rotate through daytime specialty clinics (they will not be scheduled for general practice duties). The internship will be formally structured with project/publication/presentation requirements. Licensing is a concern since Florida is extremely restrictive on dates/deadlines.
