OSU/Monsanto Student Externship Program

This externship program is sponsored on a year-to-year basis by Monsanto Dairy Business. It provides veterinary students with financial support for a clinical experience in food animal practice. First and second year CVM students in good standing in the OSU CVM are eligible to apply. Students must be members of SAVMA and must provide medical insurance during the summer experience.

Students must arrange the clinical experience with a veterinary practitioner. To fully qualify for externship support, the practitioner must be able to provide the student with food animal experience, of which some portion must be dairy practice. Students should arrange for a minimum clinical experience of 1 week. Scheduling of the experience should be done in cooperation with the practitioner. Scheduled days do not have to occur consecutively, but must occur between June 1st and September 24th.

Students selected for and who complete the externship will receive $250 for one week of externship experience. Depending on student demand, longer experiences may be supported if funding is available.  Externship awards are expected to be available by October 1st. Student and cooperating veterinarian evaluations must be received before awards can be made available.

Other Items:

  1. Students are expected to provide coveralls and boots of sufficient quality and quantity to meet standards of the cooperating practice.
  2. Students must provide their own transportation to the practice.
  3. Housing arrangements should be made in advance. Cooperating practitioners are not expected to house student externs (though some may volunteer to do so).

Application Procedure:

  1. Make preliminary arrangements for a summer experience with a veterinary practitioner.
  2. Complete the OSU/Monsanto Student Externship Program Application. Be sure to include all pertinent contact information for the cooperating veterinarian.
  3. Complete the Externship Release Agreement.
