Orrville Veterinary Clinic Summer Practice Externship Scholarship

Orrville Veterinary Clinic is a mixed animal, 7 doctor practice located in Wayne County, Ohio, about 12 miles east of Wooster.  Our practice is about 50% dairy, 35% small animal, and 15% equine.  Wayne County is Ohio’s number 1 dairy county.

Goal:

To provide first- or second-year OSU veterinary students the opportunity to experience mixed large animal practice.  The externship is flexible but duties would include riding with and assisting a large animal veterinarian on daily calls.  The focus will be to provide opportunities to experience all aspects of mixed animal medicine in a private practice setting

Eligibility:

Open to OSU CVM students who have successfully completed either their first or second year of study.  Candidates must be active, paid members of the Food Animal Club and have a sincere interest in large animal practice.  The deadline for application will be April 4, 2008.  One student will be selected per year.  The student must have health insurance and professional liability coverage before the externship begins.

Scheduling:

The duration and dates of the summer experience will be agreed upon by the student and Orrville Veterinary Clinic.  Requirements will include being present 5 days per week (weekdays) with weekends being optional.

Scholarship:

A project will be required to be completed during the externship.  The project will entail data collection, assimilation, and preparation for client presentation.  The project will be such to provide student learning and client benefit.

Upon successful completion of the experience, the student will receive a cash scholarship of $500.  The cash award should be available by September 30, following the summer experience.  

Other Items:

  1. The student will need to provide their own transportation to and from Orrville Veterinary Clinic as well as any "off duty" transportation. 
  2. We do not currently have a place for the extern to stay but would be willing to discuss options and possibilities.
  3. Meals will be the responsibility of the recipient.  
  4. Recipients must provide appropriate clothing for dairy and companion animal activities. i.e. Coveralls, boots, and professional attire for in the office.

Application Procedure:

  1. Complete the application and release form.
  2. Include a current 1-2 page resume.
  3. Include a 1 page letter of intent describing your career interests and goals for this experience.
