Archiving E-mail

Archiving e-mail removes the e-mail from the e-mail server, and stores it where storage space is less critical. This process keeps e-mail available and improves e-mail handling performance.

  • Create a directory in your U\: drive named "Exchange-Archive" (or similar) - do NOT store archives on your local machine as it will not be backed up by VIS!
  • Activate the AutoArchive feature in Outlook
    • From the main Microsoft Outlook window, click on the Tools menu
    • Click Options (this will open the Options dialog shown below)
    • Click the Other tab
    • Click AutoArchive button
Options dialog screen shot
  • The AutoArchive dialog should now be open
    • Make sure the "Delete expired items (e-mail folders only)" is not checked
    • Direct old itmes to the folder you created: U:\Exchange-Archive\archive.pst
