Smart Phones

Smart Phone
An all-in-one cell phone that acts as phone, PDA, e-mail client, calendar, etc.

Recommended and supported phones

Any device that runs Windows Mobile 5 or higher:

  • These devices have the most complete and seamless interoperability with our infrastructure and can wirelessly synchronize e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks with our Exchange (e-mail) server.
  • These systems communicate natively with Microsoft Office.
  • Microsoft maintains a list of phones with this software - sortable by cell phone carrier

NOT Recommended

The following are not recommended and will be supported minimally. Users of these devices will be directed to appropriate support at OSU Wireless or 8Help.  Since these devices cannot connect to our Exchange (e-mail) server wirelessly, individuals wishing to sync these devices will need to work with OIT directly to sync to their osu.edu account and will therefore be unable to take advantage of the Exchange (e-mail) server within the College of Veterinary Medicine.

BlackBerry

  • For wireless syncing with a BlackBerry device, CVM would be required to invest significant money and personnel resources into implementing a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) to integrate BlackBerry devices with our Exchange server and therefore do not offer that service at this time.
  • For wired synching, there is software that can be installed on a Windows PC which can sync the BlackBerry device with Outlook, though there is no wireless syncing when away from the PC. This is often not satisfactory to BlackBerry users who have invested money into the device and the associated service plan, which makes them not the ideal solution in our current environment.

iPhone

  • For wireless syncing with an iPhone device, CVM would have to open and enable security ports to our e-mail server. By doing this we increase the security exposure of the Exchange (e-mail) server and therefore do not offer that service.
  • Though Apple has licensed the Exchange ActiveSync protocol from Microsoft and has announced at least some level of support for Exchange in the upcoming iPhone 2.0 it remains to be seen how well it works.
