Canine and Feline Immunophenotyping

The Ohio State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital offers a Canine and Feline Immunophenotyping Service.

The Immunophenotyping Service is part of the Veterinary Biosciences Cytometry Core and provides phenotyping of canine and feline lymphomas and leukemias. Immunophenotyping is performed by flow cytometry using a panel of antibodies directed against surface markers that have been shown to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of canine and feline hematopoietic neoplasia.

Samples include blood samples, effusion fluids, cerebrospinal fluid, and fine needle aspirates from lymph nodes as well as other solid tissues such as the liver or spleen or masses. A minimum of one million viable cells are needed for standard analysis. Samples are submitted through the Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the total turn-around time for clinical samples is usually about 24-hours. The cost is $100.00 per canine panel and $95.00 for feline panel.

In addition to providing phenotyping for clinical samples, the Immunophenotyping Service also collates data for collaborative retrospective and prospective studies, presentations and publications. These cases are also used to provide training material for the professional veterinary curriculum as well as preparing veterinary residents for specialty board certification in clinical pathology, oncology, anatomic pathology, internal medicine, and surgery.
