The Alumni Society Board of Trustees received 14 proposals for funding for "Projects to Aid the College," for the winter board meeting held February 21. Seven projects were selected for a total of $20,200 in funding. Projects with the greatest overall positive impact for the largest number of students were given priority. Here is a list of the projects receiving funding:
Second Annual FurBall Dance - April 4, 2009
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and their guests from the College of Veterinary Medicine will have the opportunity to spend the evening at the Columbus Zoo with private access to the exhibits along with cocktails, dinner and dancing. A raffle will be held with all proceeds going to Capital Area Humane Society.
2009 SAVMA Symposium - March 26-29, 2009
For the first time since 1985, the annual SAVMA Symposium will be held at Ohio State, bringing more than 1,000 veterinary medicine students from across the country to Columbus. Planned activities include lectures, wet labs, daytime trips and nightly activities.
Veterinary Medicine "Advances in Veterinary Medicine Day" - April 9, 2009
This event brings the college community together to learn about the exciting research being carried out by veterinary students, graduate students and faculty. The Travel Grant Awards are provided for the winners of the poster competition in which faculty judges vote on the best posters in their respective research concentration areas.
AV Upgrade for Goss Auditorium
The auditorium in Goss Laboratory is used by faculty members teaching elective courses to veterinary students, the equine club and orientation classes, as well as faculty lab meetings. Partial project funding has been awarded toward upgrading the AV system in the auditorium, including a new podium, microphone and projector.
Mannequins for Canine and Feline CPR Training
Canine and Feline CPR is currently taught by the ICU faculty using one 10-year-old dog mannequin. There is only one mannequin available for each group of 33 students. More dog models and also a cat model would significantly improve the students' learning experience. Partial funding has been awarded toward two new mannequins; one feline, one canine.
Teaching Contemporary Dental Practice to Veterinary Students
Beginning in the fall quarter of 2007, Community Practice has provided a dentistry laboratory for the third-year veterinary students as part of the mandatory small animal techniques course. Although the dental labs have received uniform praise from the students, our current dental equipment presents a crucial impediment to providing a successful practice experience. Partial funding for this project has been awarded to add three scaling and polishing units.
Senior Orientation Educational Video
Current seniors as well as hospital faculty and staff were surveyed to determine which procedures in which areas of the hospital caused students the most confusion and therefore could benefit the most from the creation of new educational videos. This project will create multiple short videos that can be presented to incoming seniors at their orientation and also be held for future viewing as needed for refresher. The videos will be scripted to cover the factual information and to create context for the students, thereby enhancing their understanding and allowing for remediation should a student forget or is unable to attend any portion of the initial orientation program. Partial funding for this project has been awarded.
