Primary Client Complaint - Weight gain, Abdominal distention

History

  • Samantha, a well-vaccinated kitten, was presented to the referring DVM three months prior to admission for vomiting. Abdominal tenderness was found on examination, and radiographs suggested the presence of an abdominal foreign body. Exploratory laparotomy was normal except for enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, which were biopsied. Samantha's recovery was uneventful, and her vomiting decreased during trial and error diet changes.

One month prior to admission, Samantha was presented for abdominal distention and weight gain of 5.4 pounds in 2.5 months. She had severe abdominal distention, and resented abdominal palpation. Normal bowel movements were reported, FeLV, FIV and FIP tests all were negative, and an abdominal tap was non-diagnostic. Most recently (two days prior to admission) the owner reports decreased defecation frequency and increased urinations. Samantha is the only cat in the house, owned by a "30-something" couple who usually do not closely observe the cat.
